As a male, I’ve always found it difficult to grasp the concept of love in general. Christian love was even harder. Many people I talk to make it sound like such an intimate relationship, just like that first date where you just cant stop thinking about your date. I’m not sure whether I’ve ever felt like that about Jesus.
One day I was reading Mere Christianity and C.S. Lewis’ discussion of love was most intriguing.
Charity means ‘Love, in the Christian sense’. But love, in the Christian sense, does not mean an emotion. It is a state not of the feelings but of the will; that state of the will which we have naturally about ourselves, and must learn to have about other people.
Jesus told us to love our neighbors as we do ourselves. Although I had a broad overview of what that meant, I could never digest the true meaning. I was always nibbling at something but never knew what. So I kept asking what Love really was and I found the answer through C.S. Lewis.
e.g. If my home was robbed while I was away, I could hate the burglar. However, if I was the thief, would I hate myself?
So the question that I end up asking myself is whether I would hate myself if I did what the other person did to hurt me or others. Each and every time the answer comes out as no and I end up walking away carefree without feeling resentment towards anyone and knowing that there is nothing blocking me from loving. God’s yoke is very light indeed.
