Earpleasing Churches & the Need for Fellowship

Posted by Lukewarm On February - 5 - 2009

Doesn’t it seem like today’s churches are just so friendly and pleasing on the ears? No one talks about real, life crunching issues and it seems like too many churches preach only on the things that we want to hear like how God will bless us and how He will our love and wealth on us. These messages are all great but what about sex? the power of the internet? men’s battle with their eyes? the seduction of money?

As I reflect on my past experiences at church, I can’t remember a single time where the senior pastor or our youth group pastor talked about sex, sins of the world, being a leader under God’s image etc. Maybe I was the one that didn’t listen but I honestly don’t recall hearing the other side of what churches preach.

It’s great that a church can be positive but it also allows people to fall into a false sense of security. Satan is constantly lurking around the corner and we have to know what to expect and keep our shields up.

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

God must have known this because I now attend a church that covers all these issues and where I can feel the Holy Spirit working. It may not always be through a sermon but there are programs within the church that deals specifically with each one. Thank you God.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ

I also regret passing my teenage years and young adulthood without a spiritual mentor. It would have been fantastic to have somebody like the apostle Paul (my favorite apostle) by my side guiding me as well as rebuking me when needed. Thankfully, I have now met 4 brothers, through family small groups, who I can confide in and go to seek assistance and mentorship without feeling judged.

Whether you are single, married, male or female, a strong brother and sister in Christ is something we all need.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25
