Family Devotions

Posted by Lukewarm On February - 17 - 2009

It has been 136 days since my wife and I got married. We’ve also had 136 family devotions and it all began after the ceremony. The day after our wedding, the pastor gave us homework for each night of our honeymoon. We were to start reading from 1 John and that’s what we started doing from our first night on our honeymoon. We would read and share our thoughts and interpretations.

This continued after we returned and we now hold daily family devotions. We don’t let a day go by without praising God and worshipping Him together.

I bring this up because, to us, it is the strongest method of wiping out lukewarm Christianity. By giving up a little of our time, we are able to share deep meaningful conversations, praise God and pray for each other. It is through our commitment to family devotionals that God has spoken to us and healed our broken hearts.

Independent Worship

Studying the Bible and worshiping independently is a good start but without the support of community, we will never be able to reap the full potential and revelation that God wants to give you. All acts of powerful worship led by the Holy Spirit occurs in a community, which is defined as more than 1 person. People do not suddenly start praying in tongues when they are alone in their bedrooms. Tongues come aflame for the first time when people come together to worship.

Intimacy Through Prayer

At first, holding my wife’s hand and praying together was uncomfortable. But there is nothing in this world that is more intimate than praying sincerely with your wife. Any person can be naked and sleep with another person they met for the first time, but it is impossible to walk up to a stranger, hold their hand and start praying your heart out for them. There is absolutely nothing more intimate than prayer with your wife and family.

Healthy Marriage, Healthy Family

I am thankful that God has started our marriage on the right foot. Rather than spending 10 years without worship in the home, we’ve started from day one and we continually seek to build it. We sing, dance, pray, read scripture and share what God tells us. We’ve even written our own Gospel song. Our home is alive with God’s spirit. The time that we spend together getting to know God, really helps us to know each other and ourselves. Through the Word of God, we see things that we need to change in ourselves and seek to honor eachother rather than hold selfish intentions.

Get Started

Here are some pointers to get you started

  • Set a specific time
  • Everyone has a different style of worship and communicating with God so leave all assumptions and judgments outside
  • Start by sing your favorite songs of praise or turn on a CD to help open your heart
  • Open with prayer and invite the Holy Spirit to lead you
  • Read a chapter or two of the Bible. Psalms is always a great start and write notes so that you can share and log your journey
  • Share your thoughts with everyone
  • Share experiences which relate to the passage and open up the communication. Be honest and open.
  • Close with song and prayer

Seems easy enough but it is extremely hard to implement seeing as how a majority of families never do it. The above pointers are just rough ideas of how we go about doing it.

As a man and husband, my role as the head of the family doesn’t mean I am supposed to be brave and authoratative. My role is to cherish my family members and follow the leadership style of Jesus Christ. Are you performing your role properly and as how God intended?

Lastly, I’m sure you may be thinking that I know nothing about marriage. That is true. But what I wrote here is not about what I know. It is what God has taught me.
