Evangelism and Spiritual Warfare

Posted by Lukewarm On April - 12 - 2009

Evangelism is difficult for any Christian. I’ve heard testimonies where even the Pastor has fear and nerves when it comes to evangelizing. For any Christian, spiritual warfare is hard as it is, but our spirits undergo huge battles and wars when we try to evangelize. The devil hates it when we try to share God’s words. That is where Evangelism Explosion comes in.

While many Christians believe that evangelism is geared towards the non-believers and those outside the Church, what I have been learning through Evangelism Explosion is that “Christians” IN the Church need to be evangelized to. In other words, this is evangelism to Christians or Church evangelism.

People come to Church for many reasons and it isn’t always to spend time with God and to get to know Him deeper. Maybe it’s for friendship, something to do on the weekend, following family and friends or the events at Easter and Christmas. Whatever the reason, there are many people within the Church who do not fully understand the Gospel or do not have conviction in the Gospel. So rather than hitting the roads and witnessing in public places, which is especially difficult for first time evangelists, one of the best ways is to evangelize to those that are already in the Church. Why try to catch a bird in the wild when there is a bird already in our hands?

There have been some people who attended Church regularly, read the Bible, prayed with passion and served the Church with their hearts, but when asked why they should be allowed into heaven, many answer “because I’ve lived a good Christian life”.

Evangelism Explosion is a great way to get yourself or your Church involved in active evangelism without the stereotypical view of door to door visits. As I mentioned before, this is spiritual warfare and satan hates it when you try to share God with others. But there is no reason to be scared, my experience of evangelizing within the Church has shown me that people’s hearts are already open and they are keen to learn and accept Jesus as Lord and savior.

There is no reason to fear anything. When you evangelize or witness to somebody who is not ready, the message of God has been rejected, not you. When we start to think that we have to try and save a person, that we have to take responsibility for that persons spiritual growth, that’s when things get distorted for it is only God who can make the seed grow. He waters it, He nurtures it. All we do is plant the seed where he tells us and then we let Heaven’s floodgates rain down and let it grow into a thriving plant.

“..and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” Acts 1:8

Over the coming weeks I’ll be presenting the Gospel in an easy to understand presentation with examples which I learnt from the Evangelism Explosion course.
